our story

Chinese in America started in the 1830s or even earlier. Known as three immigration waves, more and more Chinese come to this land to pursue a new life. The first wave was during the California Gold Rush. By 1880, about 300,000 were living here, mining gold, building railroads, and working on farms or plantations. They went through a hard life while suffering from racism and discrimination. The second wave was from 1949 to 1980. With the significant improvement of discrimination, more and more Chinese came here after their dreams, especially many young Chinese came here to study. About 812,000 people lived here by 1980. The immigrant has quickly increased since then, which is called their wave. By 2020, about 5.4 million people were living here.   Although the Chinese situation in America is much better than the Gold Rush period, we are continually facing all kinds of challenges. We need to unite more than ever for a better future, not only for us but also for the next generations.
